Plournal: Poetry

3/30/2018

Original Post: March 30, 2018
Planner + Journal = Plournal - Thanks to Kell S.
My best friend is poet; a writer and a poet. In fact, I believe it was her poetry that brought us closer together so we could be best friends. We attended a Slam Poetry Meet together. You can see some of her writings here: Words of the Heart by PoetrySue

While searching for bits of poetry for my April spreads, I turned to her and casually reminded her she was a poet.

My first March 2018 Quote was by Jimmy Dean. I was tickled that it might be the sausage guy and after some research, found that it was... although, the origin of the quote went back much further.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Not only is Jimmy Dean the sausage guy, but he was an American country music singer, television host, and actor.
(August 10, 1928 – June 13, 2010)

The history of this quote goes back to 1859.

In April, for my monthly spread, I went with Langston Hughes, a phenomenal "American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri."

April Rain Song

Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter.
The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night--

And I love the rain.

(February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967).

I fell in love with Langston Hughes in my high school American Literature class.

The piece I chose for Week 1 of April is by Michael Garofalo from GardenDigest.com and Greenway Research.

The force of Spring -
mysterious, fecund, powerful beyond measure.

My conversation with my best friend consisted of me whining about the time it takes searching for the perfect quotes or poems.... but since she's a poet, during the last week of the month, she should just hand me a sheaf of papers with 4-5 poems, and I hand her some papers with calligraphy headers. Boom! A perfect trade.

Since I figured that it probably would never actually work, I thought  if I make a list of the poets and writers I use this year, searching next year will be easier.
